In the face of inequality & poverty, their role is to maintain social control and the appearance of "order," often at the cost of the public's real safety. They hold great influence over politicians, and have big public relations departments to gain influence over us. They create propaganda like the TV show 'COPS' & release their own news stories to the media, sensationalizing crime & justifying their desire for more power, bigger budgets & technology.
